POACHING AND BUSH MEAT TRADE
This elderly woman in the picture to the right was caught by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers trading in bush meat at Karuma Wildlife Conservation Area, which is part of Murchison Falls National Park- March this year, 2011.
These young men (poachers) were caught by UWA rangers with smoked Hippo meat in their hut at Karuma Wildlife Conservation Area, which is part of Murchison Falls National Park in March this year, 2011.
It is mainly women who deal in bush meat trade and while the men are engaged in poaching.
The law is very punitive when one is caught but the practice is taking place unabated due inadequate enforcement of laws and an alarming rate of poverty coupled with lack of alternative livelihoods.
